Mark Lloyd’s milestone passes quietly with victory over Cortland-Homer

, December 16, 2011 11:46 p.m.

There weren't any streamers or balloons, no ceremony with a commemorative puck after the game at center ice. Just a handshake line with the opponent and a brief post-game address to his players.
And that's precisely how Baldwinsville hockey coach Mark Lloyd wanted to "celebrate" his 300th win, a 3-0 taming of Cortland-Homer in Baldwinsville. In fact, most of his players are likely learning about their coach's milestone victory by reading this paragraph.
"I don't think anyone really knows, because I didn't even let them know the 300th was coming up," said Lloyd, now 300-278-35 during 27 seasons coaching the Bees. "I'm happy Josh Pinard earned a shutout and we got the win.
"We've had some great teams that have won a lot of games for me. If you hang around long enough, you're going to get to 300."
Lloyd has done more than just "hang around," winning six league titles. The Bees reached the Division One state final during the 2004-05 season, where they lost to McQuaid Jesuit. In 2001-02, Baldwinsville fell in the state semis.
Friday, the Bees scored a goal in each period. Mike Schneid tallied first, followed by James Wadsworth in the second before Shane O'Brien closed the show. Justin Newman dished out two assists, while Pinard stopped 23 shots.
Homer-Cortland (1-4-1) goalie Brandon Paquin turned away 31 Baldwinsville (3-2) shots. A relentless attack from the Bees ultimately earned their coach a landmark win, without them knowing.
"I'd like to think that my teams have always played hard for me, and tonight was no different," Lloyd said. "My kids giving 100 percent is good enough."
